Manolo was a magician on clay, he could hit the ball to the most incredible angles, and he would confuse his opponents with topspin lobs and drop shots. He was able to master his game, specially his service and his volleying, becoming a master in all surfaces.


  • Wimbledon champion in 1966. Until 2008, Manolo was the only Spanish player to have won Wimbledon, in addition to other 5 Grand Slams.
  • World’s number 1 in 1966
  • Three times Roland Garros (French Open) champion- 1961 y 1964 singles and 1963 doubles, when he teamed up with his good friend and many times opponent Roy Emerson.
  • US Open champion, New York, in 1965. The trophy was given to him by Robert Kennedy.
  • Seven years –1961 – 1967- in the top ten
  • Junior Spanish champion: 1955-1956
  • Eight times Spain’s absolute champion. (1958-1960-1961-62-63-64-68-69.)
  • Copa Galea Champion. This is an international championship for players under 21, in 1956-1957-1958
  • Manolo played with the Copa Davis team a total of 119 games. In singles he won 69 out of 85 games, and in doubles he won 24 out of 34.
  • Manolo was also the Copa Davis team captain for 8 years. From 1980 to 1984 and from 1995 to 1999.
  • For several years he has played senior Tournaments around the world. In 2000 won doubles in Roland Garros, where he teamed up with the American Stan Smith.

  • For the last 9 years, Manolo has been the Director of Masters Series Madrid (Mutua Madrileña) (since 2008 Open Madrid Mutua Madrileña), one of the most prestigious tennis events in the world.
